Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Product Displacement
February 12, 2007 |
There has to be a very interesting story behind the relationship, or lack thereof, between ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and the folks at the company formerly known as Apple Computer.
ABC and the extreme makeover crew have refined product placement to an art form. When the truck pulls up with furniture the furniture company’s logo is featured prominently. We know that Kraftmaid makes the kitchen cabinets, we know that Sears makes generous contributions, and no one is shy about letting us know that Papa John supplied the pizza and Ford provided the wheels.
So why, when the (fill in the blank) Family goes off to Disneyworld and gets to witness the destruction of their old house on the Macbook provided by the show, is the Apple logo on the Macbook covered over? Why, when the injured designer was given a MacBook Pro by Ty Pennington so that he could watch the family come home, was the Apple Logo covered, albeit sloppily, by a piece of blue tape?
Perhaps Apple didn’t pony up the required product placement fee. Maybe the MacBooks offend another paying sponsor. I don’t know the answer but I’m sure it’s an interesting story.
