If A Picture’s Worth 1000 Words, What’s A Picture Of 1000 Words Worth?

The visualization shown above is a ‘map’ of a conversation rendered by Pajek Social Network Analysis Software. The discussion was conducted by members of the Mac community soon after Microsoft released its Vista operating system.

Although there are less than 60 actual words in this picture, these words represent generalized concepts that have been distilled from a concordance of over 700 words. Most of these concepts were uttered multiple times during the course of the conversation and were connected to each other as words are connected in phrases, sentences, and paragraphs.

For me, this picture is valuable, not only because it represents that conversation in a visual way, but because the tools are available to make this kind of visualization possible.

Closed Captioning: Sounds Like…..

10 Oct

I was made aware, while watching the closed captioned news report being shown on the television in the car wash waiting room, that none of the democratic candidates currently running for president have pledged to uphold the “sank tackity” of life. I have to admit that I was shocked and dismayed. Not by the intended content of the statement, but by the botched translation.

Campbells Soup Advertising: Not So Mmm Good

05 Oct

Maybe it’s just me but don’t you find the new Cambell’s Soup commercials to be just a little disturbing? In an effort to show how fresh their vegetables are, Campbell ads show bushel baskets brimming with tomatoes and other veggies. We know that the tomatoes and carrots are Campbells’ tomatoes and carrots because the Cambell’s logo is embedded in every vegetable.

So while Campbells would like my reaction to be; “Wow, these are special vegetables made fresh just for Campbell’s Soup”, I’m thinking; ” I can’t believe that Campbells is promoting the use genetically modified produce”.

I really don’t have any idea where Cambell’s vegetables come from but, in the age of organics, wouldn’t you think that the Campbell’s advertising brain trust would want to avoid any suggestion that their produce has been unnaturally altered?
